Yoga Pants Pattern Biography

There are more sportswear patterns available than ever before, as it seems like the sewing scene has really embraced making slightly less glamorous things for everyday living. On the Craftsy site, I love the seam lines on the Sloan Leggings pictured above.

Of course, you can make them up in one color, but the color blocking options are pretty endless with these fun seams. They certainly will jazz up your next yoga class, that’s for sure!

Colette Patterns released a pattern for some cute leggings in an issue of their new magazine, Seamwork. The Manila Leggings feature a classic design, capped off with a cute overlapped curved cuff at the hem of each leg. A really elegant approach for hemming an otherwise basic pair of leggings.

Lastly, another great legging option are the Ooh La Leggings by New Zealand pattern company, Papercut Patterns. Available in three lengths, these leggings have really interesting seams and made up in something like faux leather spandex, they can easily be made into more than just yoga pants!
Step 2: Buy fabric

Leggings need to be made from stretch knit fabrics, but additionally, the fabric should have a strong recovery. What does that mean? Basically, if the fabric doesn’t bounce back quickly and with a snap when pulled, it isn’t good for leggings. The best fabric for leggings or yoga pants is made with some spandex in it. From there, it can be cotton or a blend, just as long as there is some spandex included so it will snap back into shape during wear.

Think of it this way – if you are in yoga class, and you are hot and sweaty, and your yoga pants are made of 100% cotton knit, they will not stay snug on your body. So imagine the sagging and stretching that could take place, then picture your sagging yoga pants as you try to do a headstand in yoga class for the first time. This is not a good image, right? So, do yourself a favor and get fabric with some spandex so the pants will behave like a second skin.

Try the Robert Kaufman Laguna Knits, which are 95% cotton and 5% spandex; the knits from Art Gallery Fabrics and their gorgeous designers, which are also 95% cotton and 5% spandex; or try something more synthetic from Wanderlust Fabrics or Girl Charlee.

Step 3: Gather the other materials

Sewing knit fabrics takes a few extra tools and supplies, so when you gather your fabric, be sure to pick up the other things you will need too, so when the mood strikes you to sew up your leggings, you’ll have all you need to get the job done.
Sewing machine needles

Depending on the weight and amount of synthetics in your fabric, you will want to pick up a Stretch or Jersey Ball Point needle in either a 70, 80, or 90 size.
Thread

Knits can be sewn on either serger/overlock machines or conventional machines, though typically you will still need a conventional machine to do any hemming and to insert elastic into the waist, so plan ahead if you intend to use both. For your serger you will need 3–5 spools of cone thread in matching fabric, and for your conventional machine, you’ll need one spool as well.
Elastic

Most leggings and yoga pants patterns require some elastic in the waistband to keep them up and on. Check the pattern’s list of notions to see the width that your chosen pattern needs.
Rotary cutter, weights, and cutting mat

Knits are much easier to cut when spread out on a large flat surface and cut with a rotary cutter, rather than with a pair of scissors. If you don’t already have one, consider picking up a rotary cutter and a mat, which will protect the blade of the cutter as well as the surface under the fabric. In addition, pattern weights will help hold the pattern down while you cut so you don’t have to use pins to hold the pattern in place while cutting.
Ball point pins

When it comes time to pin your fabric pieces together, ball point pins will glide through the fabric much easier than pins with sharp points. The ball point helps the pin go between the knitted fibers and keeps the threads from breaking as a result of the sharp point.
Step 4: Sew the pants

Okay, you’ve gathered your materials, fabric, and you have your pattern, it’s now time to finally sew them up! First, take your measurements and remember that leggings and yoga pants should have negative ease, which means the finished garment measurements will be smaller than your body’s measurements. This is so the pants will fit snuggly around your body like a second skin. How tight you choose to have them is up to you, but they shouldn’t be made to be larger than your body to behave properly in a workout situation.

Next, always pre-wash your knit fabrics. Knits shrink about 25% so you would want it to shrink before sewing, otherwise they are likely to be too small after washing. So do yourself a favor and wash and dry the fabric before cutting it up.

After you’ve cut everything out, take a scrap of your fabric and give all the stitches you intend to use a test through the machines you plan to sew with. Remember to use the same number of layers that you plan to sew, so the stitch is an accurate representation of the stitch to be sewn on the finished leggings.
Now all that’s left to do is to get to the sewing! So sit back, enjoy the process, and you will feel so great that you never have to hit the mall for basics anymore!
