MESSAGE    Ah, MERP is back! I’ve missed you. I took a few weeks off for holidays and general hibernation. It’s all about balance. We’re back in a big way this week with this gorgeous intro to one of the world’s most beloved poets. Now, do I wish this book was about a female poet? Absolutely. But regardless, I love the concept of this book. I love it even more after researching author Monica Brown, whose bio includes this lovely nugget:

    “I write from a place of deep passion, joy, and commitment to producing the highest possible quality of literature for children. In my biographies, the lives of my subjects are so interesting and transformational that I am simply giving them voice for a young audience. I don’t think it is ever too early to introduce children to the concepts of magical realism, social justice, and dreaming big!”

Um, WORD, Monica. Word. And speaking of words, this book is swarming with them — most notably outside of its actual text. Illustrator Julie Paschkis is clearly a genius, as her vivid illustrations include both Spanish and English words sprinkled throughout. My personal favorite is the trees covered in various authors’ names — further solidifying Brown’s mission to bring cross-cultural knowledge and stories to children all over the world. Love.
Having recently become obsessed with biographies — parents and fellow adults, check out Nancy Milford’s Zelda if you get the chance — I was delighted at how much I learned about Pablo Neruda through this picture book. I was a Spanish major in college, and have studied Neruda off and on since high school, but learned things I had never known about his life and work through Brown’s book. This only furthers my belief that adults should be reading children’s lit regularly. Viva MERP!
LOOKING FOR MORE? Me too, and I’m starting with adding this book to my coffee table collection. After that, I fully intend to track down Brown’s Marisol McDonald series and immediately MERP them. Extra goodies can be found simply by perusing Brown’s website — there’s even a section devoted entirely to teachers!
