Yes, I do the dancer pose in strange places during my travels like with snowshoes on at Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park or standing under the Delicate Arch in Arches National Park.

But I’m not a yogi.  I’m a yogi wannabe.  I’m not super bendy, sometimes drift away from focusing on my breathing in class, have yet to master poses like Side Crow, and just beginning to try inversions like headstands and handstands.  My journey to loving yoga didn’t start with getting hook after one class.  For me yoga has been more like the tide, I’ve ridden the ebb and flow of being in and out of classes for years.  But that changed this year when I had a giant wave of intention crash over me…to rock hot pink yoga pants.

“Rock your hot pink yoga pants,”  said a yoga instructor at the beginning of a yoga class I took a couple of years ago.  I’m used to a yoga class beginning with a story or intention, but for some reason this story stuck with me.  The instructor started class by telling us a story about her first day of law school when she went in to class in her hot pink yoga pants. Everyone else was dressed in suits, with notepads and iPads in hand.  She quickly learned she wasn’t a “suit” but was able to make it work for her.  The moral of her story is even if everyone else is rockin’ a suit, it is okay to be true to yourself and be different.  The story is a metaphor for yoga, which in turn is a lesson for life – listen to your body and rock your hot pink yoga pants doing what you can do that day, in that hour.

“What’s your intention?” That is a question asked often at the start of yoga classes.  Deep in thought over the word intention, flowing from one posture to the next in the heated, crowded room with literally a couple of inches between each mat, somewhere out of nowhere, the old-fashioned stereotypical small town idea of the father standing at the door with a shotgun with his daughter’s suitor trembling on the door steps as the father ask, “What are your intentions with my daughter?” popped into to my head like a movie scene…..then SMACK!   The girl next to me had just kicked the guy behind her in the head as she was going up in a handstand.  After seeing the guy was ok, I thought – Rule #1 – don’t try a handstand in a crowded yoga class, especially when you are in the middle row.  Rule #2 – funny things happen and it’s ok to laugh even in a yoga class. Rule #3 – when something smacks you in the head, pay attention to the moment, there’s a reason it is happening.  Rule #4 – even if I never get a proper yoga handstand, I’m still going to rock hot pink yoga pants…even if it’s only in my head.

In another class, the instructor started by saying, “This hour is for you.”  She ended the class by saying, “You gave yourself this gift.”  Not long into that class, while holding a pose, the instructor shared that while she was unpacking from moving, she pulled out a magnet that said, “What if your someday is now.”  I couldn’t get that out of my head for the rest of class.  Someday I’ll meet Mr. Right, someday I’ll travel around the world, someday I’ll climb Kilimanjaro, someday I’ll hike Machu Picchu, someday I’ll stand on the Great Wall….someday, someday, someday.

While in eagle pose and totally zoning out watching sweat droplets that looked rain droplets fall from my elbows, something dawned on me.   I have dreams and goals, but even on hikes, including some that take me over 14,000 feet, I seek out a Zen moment to soak up the scenery.  Quit chasing someday I thought, but it wasn’t until this year that “What if your someday is now” really sunk in.

Being a traveler, working a crazy schedule of early morning TV news, and constantly on the go, I returned to yoga on a regular basis this year after my doctor told me this summer I had to fit yoga into my schedule because of stress related health issues.  The girl who is always on the go was stopped dead in her tracks.  I followed my doctor’s advice and started hitting classes at my gym, Pura Vida Club, and a small yoga studio, Root Yoga Center.  One of my favorite yoga experiences this year was participating in Yoga On The Rocks at Red Rocks over the summer.  I know make 2-4 yoga classes a week.

It has been in a small studio with creaky wood floors, an exposed brick wall, giant crystals in two corners, and windows that expose part of the sky that I found I truly love yoga and the idea of rocking hot pink yoga pants.  Okay I don’t literally own a pair of hot pink yoga pants (maybe someday I will).  Instead those hot pink yoga pants are the Zen moments I relish during outdoor adventures.  My little Root Yoga studio is closing at the end of the month because the rent is too high.  I truly believe in if a door closes, a window opens.  Root has given me the wings to fly in my yoga practice.  One of the instructors just said, “Yoga is like peeling back the clouds and letting the sun shine from inside you.”  I thought it was fitting for the meteorologist who’s a yogi wannabe to hear in one of the last classes I’ll take in a studio that has helped me find my love of yoga.

The hot pink yoga pants are a reminder to live in the moment, be present, and whether it is in your small neighborhood yoga studio or on travels around the world seek out your intention and indulge in Zen moments. Namaste.
